Hamilton mayoral candidate says City Hall must move faster, work with housing partners and bring more investment to Hamilton
HAMILTON, ON — Mayoral candidate Keanin Loomis announced today that, if elected, he will work to deliver up to 5,000 affordable housing units over his first term as Mayor, as part of a broader plan to build more housing, move people out of homelessness and make City Hall a stronger partner in housing delivery.
“Hamilton is in a housing crisis, and we need to start acting like it,” said Loomis. “That means measuring success by homes people can actually move into. My goal is to deliver up to 5,000 affordable units over my term.”
Loomis said Hamilton needs to move with greater urgency at a time when housing approvals can take as long as 31 months and the city is working toward a provincial target of 47,000 new homes by 2031.
His approach would focus on removing barriers at City Hall, speeding up approvals, putting suitable surplus City land to work and bringing private, non-profit and senior-government partners together around projects that can move forward.
“Hamilton’s housing providers will have a champion in the Mayor’s Office, someone who will help remove barriers, bring partners together and get projects moving,” said Loomis.
“City Hall has a responsibility to help make sure housing gets built,” he said. “That means moving approvals faster, putting City land to work and making sure Hamilton is at the table when senior governments are investing in affordable housing.”
Loomis said success will be measured by results, not announcements.
“Hamiltonians have heard enough announcements. The measure of success is whether homes are being built, whether people are moving out of homelessness and whether families can afford to stay housed.”
